Description
Oil on canvas painting of a landscape scene, showing the center of Litchfield, Connecticut in the distance as viewed from Chestnut Hill (Road). Grass in foreground in front of a row of white trees with sparse, red leaves. Trees in grey, green, and red hues stretch back through the middle ground. On a raised area, in the far background, are a series of small buildings in white and red. Sky above in grey, blue, and red. Signed in lower-left, "C.W. Hanson." Framed in modern wood frame with incised, repeating motif running on inner edge of molding; inner silver lining with linen canvas covering. Frame is finished in a light silver, metallic paint. Stretch is backed with foam board.

Purchased from artist in 1987 as part of art show at Oliver Wolcott Library.
Comment
The "View from Chestnut Hill" has served as inspiration for multiple pieces in LHS's collection, including an 1834 drawing (2010-273-1), 1830s print (multiple), and 1920s oil painting (1964-11-8). ARTIST: Curt Hanson painted in Warren, CT, where he lived in Cornubia Hall, a converted church building.
