Oil on canvas portrait of Senator Truman Smith. Three quarter portrait of the sitter wearing black jacket, black cravat and white shirt. Plain background. Painting is framed in a period gilt frame with patterned cover and applied scrolling acanthus corners.
Comment
Senator Truman Smith was born in Roxbury, CT in 1791. He attended law school in Litchfield, CT at the Litchfield Law School. After his admission to the bar Smith set up residence and a law office in Litchfield until 1854. A Whig, by political party, Smith went on to serve in the Connecticut Legislature in the 1830s, the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1830s and 1840s, and the U.S. Senate from 1849-1854. Smith passed away in 1884.
