Description
Sash produced for a member of the Oliver Wolcott Council, Order of United American Mechanics. Sash of tricolor red, white, and blue velvet stripes, backed with blue cotton. Sash narrows in the middle and flares at each end. Three edges are finished with metallic thread border and metallic thread twist fringe. At each end is a floral motif done in metallic embroidery (red and white stripes), with series of four metallic thread and sequin stars (blue stripe).
Provenance
Founded in Philadelphia in 1845 as the Union of Workers, the Order of American Mechanics was a fraternal organization that provided benevolent funds to its members (illness, funeral expenses, etc.). At least at its founding, the organization was largely anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic.
