Description
Watercolor on ivory portrait miniature of John Deming (1887-1912). Half-length portrait of an older boy wearing a grey suit with matching vest, a white shirt, and a striped neck tie. Boy has blonde hair combed to the right and brown eyes. Seated on a blue bench or sofa, facing front against a background of dark brown. Oval portrait set in ornate brass locket under convex glass. Locket has pierced metal decoration along top edge and a small brass ring attached on reverse, at top. Signed above sitter's left knee, in red, "C.P. NEWELL. 1913."

Donated by a descendant of the Deming family of Litchfield.
Comment
Donor's family attributed the portrait as John Deming, who died the year before Newell painted this miniature. It is likely that Newell was working off of an older portrait or photograph (done when John was still alive).
