Oil on canvas, quarter length portrait of balding male with some gray hair and large bushy sideburns on cheeks. He is wearing a white shirt with thin black bow tie and black jacket. Framed in a simple wooden frame painted gold.

Augustus Schell (1812-1884).Born in Rhinebeck, NY. Schell attended the Litchfield Law School in 1831. Collector for NY port, 1857-61, Grand Sachem of Tammany Hall 1872-84. President of the NY Historical Society and the Institute for the Blind, 1866-1884. Director and Financier for RR and Public Utilities Co.
