Description
Mid-18th century butterfly table made of cherry. Oval top, splayed base with turned legs and swiveling leaf supports. Stretchers between all four legs; one broken and repaired with a rectangular metal reinforcement affixed to the inside of the stretcher. Single drawer in center of table with replaced knob. Table has been refinished. Top is heavily refinished and has possibly been removed and re-pinned.
Provenance
This table was used for several generations by the family of Harriet Kelm. The table was purchased by Ms. Kelm's great-great grandmother, Mrs. Rebecca Merriman Chatfield, from an elderly friend in the 19th century. Mrs. Chatfield gave the table to her daughter, Mrs. Harriett Lucretia Norton, who subsequently gave it to Ms. Kelm's mother, Mrs. Emeline Newbury Kelm.
