Nisus Kinney (1795-1891) was the son of Amelia Phillips, who was Ammi Phillips' aunt (making Kinney and the artist first cousins). He was raised by the family of Grinnell Spencer. He appears in the 1830 census in Winsted, and in the 1880 census in Colebrook. He is buried in Winsted. In June 1948 Phillips completed seven portraits of the Kinney family, including Nisus and his wife and their children. Nisus is believed to have exchanged a fine horse for Phillips' work.
