Description
Reads: "The Shepherd Knapp Farm was purchased by Mr. Knapp in 1898 for the use of his old Indian gardener Henry Mayo, who occupied it until his death in 1903." This inscription is written on a piece of paper which has been pasted over that containing two Pen & Ink vignettes, of Indian weapons on left & tennis racquet and baseball bat on right probably signifying the interests of the occupants of the farm, namely Mayo and The Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund Camp founded there in 1904. Between the two vignettes is an aperture in the paper which is affixed a photograph of Shepard Knapp and Henry Mayo standing at the head of the Grape Arbor at the Southern end of the Knapp property on prospect street. A walk beyond leads to the House in the distance. Henry is dressed in pin-striped dark trousers and vest and a white shirt sans collar with sleeves rolled up to the elbow. He also wears a "comfortable" dark felt hat. The portly Mr. Knapp is dressed in a light three piece suit with a matching Fedora hat and has highly polished Oxfords on his rather small feet. He holds a cigar as he and Henry are apparently discussing plans for the Garden which appears to be in the process of construction. The inscription continues below, "Henry Mayo's father was a full blooded Mohawk, a descendent from that fierce tribe . . ." Frame is .5" wide wood molding with beading at inner edge and stained walnut.
