Description
Rectangular trade sign for the Litchfield Fidelity, Insurance and Real Estate Agency, Inc. (possibly known as the Litchfield F.I.R.E Agency). Black metal sign set in wood frame which extends above and below metal. Frame is painted black, with areas of significant wear. Running just inside frame, along the edges of the metal sign, are strips of wood molding painted gold. Horizontal wooden braces run along back at middle and two other points. Text on sign is made of applied wooden lettering and painted lettering, both in shades of gold. The lettering reads, "The/LITCHFIELD/Fidelity,/Insurance/AND/Real/Estate/AGENCY/Inc./HARRIS ADV. SERVICE." The words Litchfield and Agency, as well as the first letters of the other words in the company title, are all in the applied wood lettering.
Comment
Mentions of the company appear in the 1928 Directory; in 1929, Gertrude Ryan of Norfolk Road is listed as the company's president, and her sister, Agatha, is listed as the Secretary-Treasurer. The company last appears in the 1940 Directory. There is also a mention of the Harris Advertising Service in Torrington in a 1922 directory of New England businesses.
