Description
Oil on canvas painting, 1/4 length portrait of an older gentleman facing slightly right. Long wavy thinning gray hair, balding in front, blue eyes, ruddy complexion with strong/prominent features. He wears a black jacket and white high collar with tied cravat. He is seated in a red upholstered chair, and the top of a silver mounted can is visible in the front foreground. See 1929-06-2 for companion portrait of Mrs. Collier. Thomas Collier, (1761-1842) was born in Boston. He married Elizabeth Stockwell (1761-1829) in 1780. After serving as a apprentice at the Boston News Letter, left Boston during the Revolution, moved to CT, in 1784 set up a press in Litchfield with William Copp. Later partner included Robert Adams, David Buel and Thomas Green Collier. Published the Litchfield Monitor from 1784-1808, a Federalist newspaper. Indicted for libel against President Thomas Jefferson for articles in his paper, brought before the US Circuit Court. See article in Dec 2, 1801 issue of the Monitor. Left Litchfield c. 1808, settled in Georgia.
