Description

Green lines, gilt finials, chains of green leaves on rims and shoulders. Green shield with tree crest in a rococo frame around a book with "Litchfield County/University Club/1896" and scroll underneath with "Lux Caritus Unitas Constantis." Teapot base (A) has round body with ear handle. S-spout with gilt on the end. Pomegranate finial with gilt accents on the lid (B).

Provenance

Souvenirs were a regular feature of Club meetings in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1903 and 1907, guests at the Club's meetings in Norfolk were presented with individual pieces of a porcelain tea set as souvenirs. Newspaper coverage states that the pieces were marked with the Club's crest and described them as Limoges porcelain, named for the hard-paste porcelain factories in and around Limoges, France. These documents can be found in the LCUC scrapbooks in the LHS Archives.

Comment

Founded in 1896, the Litchfield County University Club (LCUC) is an organization that awards scholarships and hosts member dinners and lecturers. Adopted in 1897, the Club's crest usually features a line of text within the book, "Litchfield County University Club 1896." The Club's motto translates to "Light, Charity, Unity, Constancy"; the first letters of each word also form an initialism of the Club's name, L.C.U.C.
