Oil Painting - Colonel Samuel Canfield (1726-1799)
            Object Number
                1917-04-9
            Description
Bust portrait in oval. Full face, turned alittle to right. Elderly man with long white hair and brown eyes. Wears a dark green coat with high collar, large buttons, dark green vest, white collar band. Frame is black half-round molding with small gold inset.
            Provenance
The portrait has a long-standing attribution to Richard Jennys or (more likely) his son, William Jennys. For similar examples attributed to Jennys, see the portraits of Captain Lazarus and Hannah Bostwick Ruggles sold at Sotheby's in 2008. The Ruggles and Canfields were both New Milford residents. The portrait of Asher Canfield in the Society's collection (1917-04-8), also attributed to Jennys, has stylistic similarities to other attributed pieces.
            Comment
Samuel Canfield was born and lived in New Milford. At the time of Shay's rebellion, he was chosen among others to go to Sharon to suppress Shay's attempts to instigate rebellion in that town. He married Elizabeth Judson; father of Asher, Ithamar, and Judge Judson Canfield.
