Oil Painting - Bantam Lake and Genre Scene
Object Number
2016-61-1
Description
Two-sided painting in wooden frame, both sides done in oil on canvas or canvas board. One side features a landscape painting of Bantam Lake, and the other a genre scene of travelers encountering one another at a crossroads. The Bantam Lake scene features cleared fields on a hillside in the foreground, with thick forests and hills visible across the lake. One structure (possibly a barn or farmhouse) is visible to the far left of the foreground. The view is likely from the lake's south shore, with the taller peak visible to the left representing Mt. Tom. The genre scene features two women on horseback on a dirt crossroads; the woman on the left (grey dress and riding hat) is reaching out to a child being held up by a third woman, standing to the left of the horses. With her are a young girl (blue dress, red hair) and man (holding a hat and rake). The man is standing behind a cart containing rocks. A sign post with crossing road names and two additional riders (both female) are visible in the background, with a small grey dog in the foreground. The two paintings are either on thin canvas board or are painting on the front and back of a single stretched canvas. The frame is constructed with two finished sides joined together; the Bantam Lake scene is in a dark stained wood, the other a gilt wood. Single metal loop at top of frame.
