Description
The sampler is worked in cross stitch on canvas in shades of blue. There are five kinds of alphabets, followed by the following: Ruth Croswell Marked this in The 63 year of Her Age. 1827. a present for Elizabeth L. Wey and may she like Elizabeth of old walk in all the com mandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless Numbers 1 to 10. Followed by: Ruth Pierce born February 22 1765. was married to Thomas Croswell July 18 1791. Died Jan 16 1844 aged 76 R.C. Elizabeth Wey Died Feb 10 1845. Ruth Croswell Died January 7. 1862."

Ruth Pierce was born in Litchfield, Connecticut February 22, 1765 to John Pierce and his first wife Mary (Paterson). She was Sarah Pierce's older sister. She married Dr. Thomas O'Hara Croswell in 1791 and moved with him to Catskill, New York the following year. They had one adopted daughter. She died January 7, 1862. Ruth Pierce claimed that she attended George Washington's inauguration on April 30, 1789 by special invitation.
