Description
Linen thread sampler with bound edges, scalloped border in beige thread, with large cross stitch alphabet (A-R) on top line, S-Z and block 2-9 on second line, a-y on third line, A-M in upper case script and fourth line, all in beige and blue threads with lines of different stitches between. Below, eagle with black cross-stitch body with wings of blue, pink, yellow and brown, outlined in beige. Underneath, green extended octagon with floral flanking vines - inside octagon "Sarah Perry/Miss Pierces/Litchfield 1822" in pink cross-stitch.
Provenance
Sarah Perry Gates, of Richmond, MA, attended the Litchfield Female Academy in 1818 and 1822.
