Description
Oil on canvas 3/4 length portrait of a seated middle age male, Frederick A. Tallmadge, (1792-1869), seated facing left. He sits facing left, he has black hair, side burns, heavy black eyebrows and blue eyes. He wears a long black dress coat and double breasted vest, white pleated shirt, high stiff wing collar and black silk tie. He holds a folded piece of paper in his right hand, his left hand and arm rest on the chair arm.
Comment
Frederick Augustus Tallmadge (1792-1869) was born in Litchfield, the son of Colonel Benjamin and Mary Floyd Tallmadge. He graduated from Yale in 1811, attended the Litchfield Law School in 1811 and was admitted to the bar in the same year. He served as a Sargent in the War of 1812, and in 1815, he married Elizabeth Canfield of Sharon, CT. The couple moved to NYC, where he served in the Senate 1837-40, as the Recorder for NYC 1841-46 1848-51, Congressman from NY 1847-49, Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, 1857-62, Clerk of the Court of Appeals for NY 1862-65. He died in 1869 while visiting Litchfield.
