Description
Small/medium pressed porcelain dish, or plate, with raised pressed detailing around the center medallion, and radiating lines to the corners. Edges are gilded and irregularly scalloped. The heaviest gilding is directly on the plate's edges, and then the gilding fades towards the center. An oval medallion at the center of the plate shows a transfer-printed scene labeled underneath "Congregational Church, Litchfield, Conn.," with the church, the surrounding buildings and the town green. The church existed in Litchfield in this form from 1873 to 1929. Probable date of this plate is c. 1890. It is marked on the underside "Made in Germany / Granniss & Elmore / Litchfield, Conn." A clear "k" has also been stamped in the lead glaze on the base.
Comment
Granniss and Elmore was a drugstore in Litchfield. They would commission souvenir objects to marked to the town and their store.
