Description
Bulbous jug, or pitcher, with slightly elongated triangular spout. Handle is made in one piece with five decorative segmented sections. The jug is glazed white with a horizontal band of red leaf-like decoration at the neck, edged on both sides with a thin horizontal red stripe which on the top continues across the spout and on the bottom, just under the spout. On one side are the words "The Farmers Arms" with "God Speed the Plow" below in red. A central shield is outlined in read and divided into four sections, each containing some farming implement. The shield is surmounted by a hand plow. Two figures, one on each side of the jug, rest a hand on the shield. The farmer, on the right, facing, and the farmer's wife on the left, facing. Predominant colors are red, green, and yellow. The other side of the jug is more intricately decorated with five phrases. The center phrase is in a shield shaped cartouche, and says "CALL BOLDLY / PAY FREELY / PART QUIETLY / Thes Rules observed / Will bring no Sorrow / Pay to day I'll / Trust to / Morrow." The oval above the center shield is outlined in red and reads, "Those who bring tobacco here / muft pay for pipes they are so dear / My pipes I cant afford to give / if by my trade I mean to live / so pray be seated call away / For what you pleas and I'll obey." Going counter-clockwise, phrase number 2 is to the left of the center and reads, "Who e'er you are / Think of the shot / Or what Place e'er / you be / He's welcomer that pays / one Pot / Then him that fooref / up Three." The phrase below center reads, "Custermers come & I did truft them / So I lost my liquor and their custom / To lose them both it greaves me fore / I'm resolved to truft no more / I strive to keep a decent Tap / for ready money but I / Strap." The final phrase is to the right of center and reads, "The Master / Doth crave / his money to have / The Distiller says / have it he must / By this you may see / How the case is with me / So I pray you wont ask /
