Comment
This trunk has been attributed to David Matthews, colonial mayor of New York, who stayed with Major Moses Seymour at his home on South Street while imprisoned in Litchfield in 1776. Matthews escaped one day while taking a walk. He credited local Loyalist Joel Stone with aiding in his escape. The trunk has passed through the Seymour family but the provenance is fuzzy.
