Description
Charcoal and pastel or crayon portrait of a gentleman. Sitter is shown from the chest up, facing forward. He has short, graying hair parted in the middle and a graying beard. Sitter is wearing a dark jacket and shirt with white collar. Portrait is executed on paper backed with linen. "G.B. Torrey/ 1889" signed in lower right.
Provenance
George Burroughs Torrey was an American painter best known for his portraits, including those of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Taft, and Hoover. Born in New York, his first studio was on Fifth Avenue where he drew and painted portraits. By 1893, his studio had relocated to Paris, France.
Comment
Dr. Storrs Ozias Seymour was the son of Judge Origen Storrs Seymour. Torrey also completed a charcoal portrait of Origen Storrs Seymour in the Historical Society's collection (see 1950-04-9).
