Description
Oval platter with deep center and typical gold, blue and multi-colored Chinese floral decoration of the Worcester factories. Called "Royal Worcester" and it was purchased by William Washington, cousin of George Washington, in 1824. Part of a dinner set. Fastened to the base of the platter is a letter from William Washington's grand-daughter, Martha B. Washington. It reads: "Charleston, S.C. May 20 '91/Dear Mr. Tallmadge/In reply to your questions about the Royal Worcester platter that you have, it was owned (a part of a dinner set) by my grandfather Wm. Washington/was purchased by him in 1824. Any other information you want in my power to give, I will be pleased to do so./Yours sincerely,/Martha Washington.
