Description
Glazed earthenware sugar bowl used as a toy or play teaware. A - Off-white ceramic sugar bowl with brown transfer-printed decoration. Low-bellied with rounded rectangular base and two squared handles. Identical landscape scene on either side featuring two pagodas with a river or lake in front; two men seem to be rowing a boat on the water, in which stands a woman in a black dress and hat. The lip of the bowl features an alternating pattern of pagodas and geometric motifs with flower clusters, with a geometric border above. The handles feature the same geometric motif with flower clusters. B - Off-white ceramic lid with brown transfer-printed decoration and rectangular knob. Alternating pagoda scenes and geometric motifs with flower clusters around rim, with a geometric border above.
Provenance
Belonged to Margaret Sargent Fisher, wife of Samuel H. Fisher, who grew up in New Haven in the 1870s-1880s. Later displayed in Babbitt home.
