Description
Woven coverlet - sunburst, double lily with partridge border and corner squares with markings. Colors of coverlet are red and blue bands with red and blue side fringe and white fringe along the bottom. Seam line down center. Two corner blocks with text "PETER/AND JOHN/HARTMAN" in red and "WOOSTER/OHIO/1837" in black.

Born in Germany, the Hartman family immigrated to America when Peter was a young boy. They settled first in Pennsylvania before continued to Wayne County, Ohio. One source indicates that Peter was a Mennonite preacher, as well as a farmer and weaver. When his weaving business grew, his brother Peter joined him for a time.
