Red and white 4th of July costume - white linen with red trim; machine stitched a: Pants - fly front with red stripe down legs and at waistband; buttons at sides b: Coat - long sleeves; tails; high collar; imitation of uniform; red lining on cuffs and collar; false pockets on tails and angled decoration on front; 45 brass buttons
Comment
This suit was made in 1876 by Emma Benedict Knapp for her three-year-old son Shepherd to wear on July 4th. The Knapp family became part-time residents of Litchfield in the 1890s and built a large Colonial Revival home on Prospect Street.
