Description
Commemorative half dollar issued in conjunction with the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, marking the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's first voyage to the Americas. The obverse bears a right-facing portrait of Columbus; the reverse bears an image of the Santa Maria above two hemispheres.
Provenance
Beginning in 1892, the sale of Columbian half dollar commemorative coins helped raise funds for the construction of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Comment
Olin Levi Warner provided the overall designs for the coin's two sides; Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber (obverse) and his assistant, George T. Morgan (reverse), modified the designs for production.
