Description
Copy of the portrait of Clarissa Seymour Marsh by Ralph Earl. Small oval watercolor, very similar to original portrait, except for handling of face and background - style and technique is naive. Evidence of pencil drawing underneath. The image is of a young woman seated in a wooded landscape. She wears a white dress with pink underdress with black sash. She holds a fan on her lap and wears bracelets and a black choker band at her neck. Her hair is elaborately arranged with a veil at the back.
Provenance
This painting descended in the Marsh family before being donated to the Litchfield Historical Society by a descendant.
Comment
Ralph Earl painted all of Moses Seymour's family, including his daughter Clarissa in 1789. Clarissa was born in 1772 and died in 1863. On October 27, 1791 she named her cousin, Rev. Truman Marsh, rector at St. Micheal's in Litchfield. Earl painted her husband in 1791.
