Description
A frontal view of the Rev. Truman Marsh house where it stood on West Street in Litchfield (later moved to Meadow Street and converted into two homes). The work is a photograph which has been painted. The house is white with green shutters and tall, green leafed trees at the front, back and left side. Inside the classically styled doorway is an older woman, and to the left a younger woman. A white picket fence with a front gate separates the house from the road in front. To the left of the house is an unpainted area, where buildings are visible in the distance. There is faint writing on verso that reads "Barnes" and "Buffalo, NY".
Provenance
Rev. Truman Marsh was the rector of St. Michael's Church in Litchfield from 1799-1830. The painting descended in the Marsh family and was donated by one of its descendents.
Comment
The woman in the white cap in the doorway may be Clarissa Seymour Marsh. There is a similar looking image of her from around the same time in the Litchfield Historical Society archives.
