Description
Square textile fragment with elaborate floral embroidery. Twill weave cotton background, dyed pale blue and stitched to muslin backing. Embroidery worked in silk crewel with floral design featuring heart-shaped petals, tulips, rose buds, and other flowers done in white, blue, red, green, tan, and yellow. Embroidered in cross stitch at bottom are initials "SP" and date "83."
Provenance
Accession record indicates the piece was worked by Mrs. Sally Pierpont, at the age of 83. Note reads "She was Sarah Phelps/ daughter of Edward Phelps of Litchfield/ born Oct 4 1766 and was wife of David Pierpont of New Haven/She dies in 1851, two years after this embroidery was worked." The Ledger contains an entry for Sarah Phelps Pierpont with the same birth dates, but makes no mention of Sarah ever going by the name Sally.
