Description
Souvenir book bank produced for the Litchfield Savings Society, Litchfield, Connecticut. Rectangular bank of gold metal with leather-bound cover, meant to resemble a book. Leather is heavily embossed and colored tan and dark brown. Front of the bank has an image of the bank building with text underneath, "THE LITCHFIELD/SAVINGS SOCIETY/LITCHFIELD, CONN."; reverse has text "MUTUAL SAVINGS BANK/OF CONNECTICUT" surrounding word "STABILITY" set in oval shape. The spine has text "BOOK OF THRIFT" above a column with winged capitol and numerals "VIII." Opening for coins at top with keyhole to right. Engraved on bottom, "BANKERs UTILITIES CO./SAN FRANCISCO/PATENTED/JULY 3, 1923/MADE IN U.S.A."
Provenance
The Litchfield Savings Society was incorporated in May 1850. In 1952, the bank changed its name to The Litchfield Savings Bank, and changed it again in 1984 to Litchfield Bancorp. Banker Utilities Co. produced book banks from 1923 to about 1960.
