Description

U.S. Navy enlisted man's dress blue service uniform, in three parts, World War II era. A: Navy blue wool flannel flat hat. Black silk ribbon band with stamped printing, "U.S. NAVY" with bow at center-back. Black silk lining, tan leather interior band. Dark brown diamond patch stitched to lining. B: Navy blue wool twill gabardine jumper. Center-front slit opening, sailor collar with three stripes of off-white braid and two monogrammed stars. Left breast pocket on V'd yoke front, with long sleeves and cuffs with three stripes of off-white braid and two buttons for closure. Left sleeve has a patch showing a white eagle with propeller blades and "M/O" above two red chevrons. Metal zipper at left side. V'd yoke on center-back. Black silk label on inside at center-back with gold script monogram, "R7 Reynolds." Off-white cotton label under collar, "AMERICAN CLOTHING CO./NAME - Robert Reynolds/DATE - 11/10/43/[ ] - 787." C: Navy blue wool twill gabardine, bell bottom trousers. Center-front opening with buttoned waistband. Two cotton pockets at the waist, which has a fall-down front buttoned panel and cotton till lacing at center-back. Flap-buttoned pocket at right-back on interior. Black silk lining at waistband. Monogrammed script label at center-back, right, "R.R." Cotton labels at right inside pocket, "Reynolds and "SAMPSON CLOTHING CO./60 N. 12th STREET/PHILADELPHIA, PA/[ ]" and handwritten label "R. Reynolds."

Provenance

Worn by Robert F. Reynolds while serving on the USS San Jacinto during World War II. Reynolds later served as principal of Bantam School, Center School, and assistant principal of the Litchfield Junior High School.

Comment

Sleeve insignia indicates that Reynolds was a Petty Officer 2nd Class, with specification as a Motor Machinist's Mate.
