Oil on canvas portrait of Judge Judson Canfield, (1759-1840), 1/2 length of an old man facing left, wearing a black coat and vest, ruffled white shirt and white tie. Receding thin white hair, sunken mouth, hazel eyes. See 1955-02-2 for companion portrait of his wife, Mabel Ruggles Canfield. Painted in 1839 at the age of 80.
Comment
Judge Judson Canfield (1759-1840) was a native of New Milford, brother of Asher Canfield. Graduated from Yale in 1782, and began his law practice. In 1786, following death of his uncle Judson, Mabel and Judson moved to Sharon, where he took over his uncle's law practice. Member of CT House of Reps, Judge of Court of Common Pleas. Bought western lands in Ohio, moved there in 1815 after forced to sell home in Sharon, Canfield, Ohio was named after him in 1798. Came back east because his wife did not like Ohio.
