Description
Oil on canvas portrait of Seth Preston Beers (1781-1863), Rectangular 1/2 length portrait of a portly middle aged man, seated, facing left. Black hair and hazel eyes, dressed in black suit, white shirt and collar, black bow tie. His right arm rests on a table holding a pamphlet and in his right hand a quill pen.
Comment
Seth Preston Beers was born in Woodbury in 1781, the son of Josiah and Elizabeth (Preston) Beers. Came to Litchfield Law School in 1803. Admitted to the Bar in 1805. U.S. Tax Collector 1812-13; State's Attorney 1820-1825; CT House of Representatives 1820-23, CT Senate 1824; Commissioner of CT School Fund 1824-49. Married Belinda Webster, a Litchfield Female Academy student, in 1807. Very active in St. Michael's Episcopal Church, left the majority of his estate to the church. Long Obituary in Litchfield Enquirer, September 10, 1863, p. 2 col. 2, and record of funeral September 17, 1863, p. 2 col. 3. Funeral at St. Michael's pall bearers included 3 LLS students, George C. and Lewis B. Woodruff and Origin Storrs Seymour.
