Description
Oil on canvas landscape painting featuring a cluster of stone houses on a village street corner. Two female figures, one in foreround walking away, other in middle ground walking to left. Painted in Polperro, Cornwall, England in 1903. Signed lower left "ADELAIDE DEMING"
Provenance
Exhibited at the MacDowell Club, March 7 to 17, 1914; the National Academy, New York; the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts Annual Art Exhibit in 1916; and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Comment
Adelaide Deming was an artist and educator working largely in New York, although she kept a residence in Litchfield. She studied at the Art Students League and with artists like William Merritt Chase. She taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1902 to 1910. Deming was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Paint and Clay Club of New Haven, the Kent Art Association, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the American Watercolor Society.
