Description
Oil on mahogany 1/4 length portrait of Oliver Wolcott, Jr. facing left, wearing a dark coat, brass buttons, white shirt and ruffled stock, blue eyes, brown with white receding hairline, in a peak atop head in front. Heavy gilt gesso frame of anthemion leaves, egg and dart inner border and deeply curved concave side.
Comment
Oliver Wolcott, Jr. (1760-1833) the son of Oliver and Lorana (Collins) Wolcott, attended Yale in 1778, then the Litchfield Law School in 1778. He was admitted to the Bar in 1781 and served in the Revolution in charge of army stores in Litchfield. He was Auditor of the Federal Treasury 1789-1791, Comptroller 1791-1795, and succeeded Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Washington and Adams 1795-1800, US Judge of the Second Circuit 1801-1802, President of Merchants Bank in NYC 1803-1804, President of the Bank of America 1812-1814, Manager of Wolcottville Manufacturing in Torrington, 1815, Governor of CT 1817-27, and President of CT Constitutional Convention 1818. Married Elizabeth Stoughton of Windsor, CT in 1785. Died in 1833 in NYC.
