A: Base of stoneware jar; round; part of label evident on one side "Marmalade" and "London 1862" visible in black lettering B: Small piece of stoneware with similar design motif as base of jar
Provenance
Matching the text on the shard with extant examples, the jar was for James Keiller & Sons "Dundee" marmalade. The text remnants match that of the James Keiller & Sons jars printed with the following awards: the Grand Medal of Merit in Vienna in 1873 and "the only prize medal for marmalade" in London in 1862.
