Description
The cover of watch is silver engraved decoration on back, child's head surrounded with strap work, shell and three eagles. Catch on side opposite hinge and top has hole for stem. Watch face - hours in Roman Numerals inland in black in silver, minutes in arabic numbers on outer edge. Brass hands and brass around edge. Center of face is lower than face and is carved with scrolls and one Cherub's head, shell and eagle's head about banners with names engraved on them. The works are brass, chain driven. The works are contained under an elaborate open work top held up by four vase standards. It has a double, closely linked silver chain with hook for key (missing) and a temple-like watch fob, which is late 19th century. The mid-bracket of chain is also silver and is marked "VI" on raised rectangle. Engraved on face "Cartwright/London" Mark inside cover R.B. in rectangle same mark inside watch. The brass works are marked "T. Cartwright/London" The watch belonged to Brewster family for three generations - Philip B. Brewster; Rev. William J. Brewster and his father -------------- of New Haven, CT. Could have belonged to Elder William Brewster.
