Description
Tiger tail maple long gun. Iron barrel with sight at end, a small knob, iron side plate, pointed tang, scrolled trigger, and percussion cap. Additional brass plates have inscriptions and decorations. Top plate reads, " Made August the 20th". Smaller wrist top plate reads, "1758". Butt plate reads, "Made/ by Medad Hills at/ Goshen". The original flint lock had been converted to percussion, flintlock restored in the 1970s with nonoriginal hardware. Barrell shortened but restored in the 1970s.
Comment
This gun was made for, and owned by Rev. Sylvanus Osborn, the first minister in Warren, CT in 1758. Osborn was called to Warren in June of 1757, and was their minister for fourteen years. During that time he is said to have carried this gun in "The War" - likely the French and Indian War.
