Description
A-C - all made of lava of Mt. Vesuvius. A - Brooch - Large carved woman's head in center with bunches of grapes and grape leaves in her hair. Hair ends in large curls on either side of her head from which hangs a single grape leaf. A wine caraff hangs from her neck. On each side of her head is a small head of a goat or monkey. Hanging from the lip of one is a grape leave with an unopened flower. B - Earrings - For pierced ears. Gold loop on back of each earring. Womans head at top with grapes bunches and leaves in hair. A horizontal bar hangs from bottom of woman's head with two unopened flower buds and a wine caraff in the center. C - Cuff Studs - Each stud is a carved woman's head with grape bunches and leaves in hair. Swag of fabric under chin. D - Case - brown leather case lined on lid with blue silk and on base with purple velvet. Base contructed of wood and cardboard. Brass clasp to open and hinges on back side of case.
Comment
This set of jewelry was purchased by Julius Deming Perkins and Margaretta Dotterer Perkins on their honeymoon tour of Europe in 1868. They purchased the set while in Italy. They sailed on the "Persia" of Cunard Lines and toured Europe, Egypt and the Palestines. The archives contains letters of their travels
