Description
Metal nameplate from the Liberty Ship Henry Ward Beecher. Rectangular, black metal nameplate with white letters impressed into metal. Reads "S.S. HENRY WARD BEECHER/ BUILT FOR/ U.S. MARITIME COMMISSION/ HULL NO. 642/ BY/ CALIFORNIA SHIPBUILDING CORPORATION/ LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA/ SEPTEMBER 1942." Nameplate bordered with a thin white stripe. Nameplate mounted on a wooden plaque with a brass plate below nameplate. Brass plate reads "PRESENTED TO/ THE LITCHFIELD HISTORICAL SOCIETY/ BY/ LIBERTY SHIP MEMORIAL PROGRAM/ AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MARINE UNDERWRITERS/ AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE INSTITUTE/ AND/ UNITED STATES MARITIME ADMINISTRATION/ JULY 20, 1968."

The S.S. Henry Ward Beecher was a Liberty Ship built in 1942. Liberty Ships were conceived and built to meet the need for ocean-going vessels during WWII. They were named for great Americans who had contributed to the history of the United States. Over 2,000 Liberty Ships were launched in all.
