Description
Dark brown heavy wool forms the exterior of this child's cape. The interior is lined with a finer light brown linen or cotton. Brown rope or cord has been sewn into the hem around the entire piece. The cording also extends from the hem, up the front opening and around the neck. A thin filling of wool, or cotton, can be seen through some small holes in the cape. No fastening mechanism is apparent but a small loop of brown thread hints that there may have once been a hook and eye closure. All of the sewing appears to have been hand done. This cape may have been an accompaniment to a young boy's overcoat. The color, material, and lack of adornment are uncharacteristic in the style of young girl's capes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plain look of the piece does however fit in with the types of capes that boys and young men wore with their out-door coats. It may also, however, just be a girl's or a young woman's simple day cape.
