Description
Round silver medal with silk ribbon attached with metal clasp. Ribbon has yellow base with white, black and blue stripes. Obverse of medal: Center is left facing bearded relief of profile of King George V. Surrounding the relief is lettering that runs in circle around edge: "GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP". (Translation: George V, King of all the British Isles and Emperor of India). Reverse of medal: Relief of nude figure with laurel wreath riding mount and holding a blade. Mount is stepping on a shield with the Prussian eagle on it, skull and crossbones lying next to it. Figure is on a beach with the sun visible overhead. To the left of the figure along rim "1914", to the right along rim "1918". Along edge, inscription "CAPT. J.O. TAYLOR". British World War I Medal.
Provenance
Oswald W. Marrin Jr. (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.
