Comment
Born in Brooklyn in 1856, William Merritt Post studied at the Art Students League alongside James Carroll Beckwith, a leading portrait, landscape, and genre painter of the Naturalist style. Post moved to New Jersey in 1883, the same year he began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design. He later served as secretary of the American Watercolor Society and was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and other artist organizations. He moved to West Morris in 1912 and to Bantam in 1923. Post is known for his rural landscapes, most of which feature streams and are completed in a Tonalist style.
