Description
Gouache on paper portrait of Hiram Turner Coley by artist/ collector Don Troiani, based on old photographs. The subject is standing in his Civil War uniform, leaning on his rifle where the bayonet attaches to the barrel. He stands on a bit of grass, but behind him are woven branches that support trenches. The painting is in a maple frame and triple matted in blue, medium gray and light gray. The glazing is plexiglass. A paper label with the following information in black ink is attached to the plexi - "Hiram Turner Coley C. 1863/ Company D, Second Ct. Heavy Artillery/ Born February 29, 1835 at Plymouth Hollow, Ct./ Killed at Winchester, Va. September 18, 1964 (sic - should be 1864)/ Painted by Don Troiani From Old Photographs." Same label attached to verso. On reverse - paper backing, clear plastic pocket with H.T. Coley genealogy. Frame has two eye-hooks, a picture wire, wall bumpers at bottom of frame.
Comment
Hiram Turner Coley was the son of Samuel and Lucinda Turner Coley who lived in Fluteville, CT. The uniform and weapons depicted in the portrait are those of Litchfield's Second Connecticut Heavy Artillery as they were configured while serving in the forts around Washington. Hiram was killed at Winchester, VA on September 19, 1864 and is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Thomaston, CT (his body having been removed from a Waterbury cemetery).
