Description
Hand wrought iron boot scrape in the shape of a whale, made by Asa D. Hall, a blacksmith and sculptor in East Litchfield. Wrought iron whale with eye, mouth, and tail. The top of the whale tapers to a dull point to form the scrape. Whale is attached to a rectangular wrought iron base measuring 5.5" long and 2.5" wide, with holes in each of the four corners. Inscribed in the base are the artist's initials, "AH." Paper label on bottom, "Made by/Asa D. Hall - Blacksmith/R.R. 3, E. Litchfield Rd./Litchfield, Conn. 06759."
Provenance
Asa D. Hall lived in East Litchfield and worked at the American Brass mill in nearby Torrington. Towards the end of his life, Hall began blacksmithing and crafting hand-wrought metal sculptures, including both large outdoor sculptures and smaller pieces.
