Description
One of two side chairs, cherry with five straight vertical slat back, stiles slant slighlty out from body, back legs curve outward from seat and rake back below seat. The outer edges of front legs, crest rail, stiles, seat rail and shoe are molded. Inside legs are champhered. Legs have holes for casters.
Comment
Chairs have history asscoaited with Washington's farewell address at Fraunces Tavern on Dec.4, 1783. Chairs at tavern, possibly given as tokens to aides de camps (including Tallmadge and Putnam) or made later to commemorate day. One chair descended from Benjamin Tallmadge. His son Frederick married Elizabeth Canfield. Their daugher Elizabeth married J.P. White. Their daughter Annie Louise White married Frank Underhill. Their daugher Cora Underhill married Jerald Lowe. Her second marriage was to Watson Beach Day. She died in 1960 leaving the chairs to her neice Mrs. Price Glover. The other chair descended from Isreal Putnam through Cora Underhills second husband Watson Beach Day, who was Putnam's ancestor.
