Description
Mourning miniature. Oval image, ink and watercolor on ivory. Scene of woman in white dress in mourning pose over tombstone, with weeping willow to the left, willow branches are accentuated with woven hair. Tombstone inscribed: "Sacred to the/MEMORY/of Miss/Clarissa Champion/OB October 22/1801/AE 16 YEARS 7/months 22 days." Encased in rose gold frame, opening in back with glass bezel, containing lock of hair, leather case.
Comment
Clarissa Champion was born Feb. 24, 1785 in East Haddam, CT, the daughter of Epaphroditus Champion (1749-1834), a merchant, politician and Congressman. She attended the Litchfield Female Academy in 1799. Her sister, Lucretia attended in the 1790's. Her brother Epaphroditus attended the Litchfield Law School in 1805. Clarissa died unmarried.
