Description
Shield shaped varnished oak sign with "LITCHFIELD HISTORICAL SOCIETY" painted in black on red in center of sign. "1856-1893 SUCCESSOR TO THE LITCHFIELD COUNTY ANTIQUARIAN AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY" painted in black around edge. Seal of Connecticut in black with marks representing the signatures of the Indian's who signed Litchfield's charter on sign as well.
Comment
This sign hung on the front of the Bronson Store on South Street from 1893 until 1901 where the Litchfield Historical Society rented a room as their first permanent home. The sign was designed by Emily Noyes Vanderpoel, first curator of the Litchfield Historical Society.
