Description
Removable handle with fabric straps attached to rectangular iron bar, possibly a piece of military equipment from World War II era. Handle made of two cylindrical pieces of wood attached to small metal bars at either end, which then run down to connect to the rectangular iron bar. Fabric straps wrap around bars and are attached through slots on the rectangular iron bar. At center of rectangular bar, iron latch in the shape of a "V." Latch can be positioned vertically to hold lower wooden handle, or horizontal to allow handle to rotate. Handle can be rotated clockwise to let out straps and counter-clockwise to tighten them again. On iron bar, engraved lettering "PAT D NOV./11/9."
Provenance
Donated with personal effects of Oswald W. Marrin Jr. Marrin (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.
