Description
Rectangular box made of birch, possibly intended as a cigarette or cigar box. Thin panels of light-colored wood, joined together with glue. Lid hinged at back with thin metal rod. Metal letters inserted into lid in upper-left corner, "W.W.R" with no evidence of additional letters or periods. Taped inside box is a typed history of its origin and ownership.
Provenance
The box belonged to William W. Rockhill (1854-1914), a Litchfield resident buried in East Cemetery. Rockhill served as an American ambassador in Greece, Serbia, Romania, China (app. 1905), Russia (app. 1909), and the Ottoman Empire (app. 1911). It is believed that he acquired the box while serving in Russia. Rockhill married into the Perkins family of Litchfield and lived in the Julius Deming House. The house was later purchased by Ludlow Bull in 1936. At the time of its donation, the box had passed to descendants of Bull's wife, Katherine E. Bull.
