Description
Wool bed covering with multi-colored crewel work embroidery in each corner. Bed covering woven from a cream wool. Edges of item decorated with a zig-zag stitch done in red wood yarn. Each corner contains a floral decoration of crewel work in greens, yellows, pinks, and blues. Cream and light blue yarn in embroidery appear to be cotton - all other yarns wool. Each crewel work floral design is unique. Signature that reads, "Betsey M. Morse/ Litchfield Conn/ 1836" stitched in red wool yarn across center, top of piece. Betsey M. Morse was born in Litchfield, CT in 1815. She was the daughter of John Morse (1789- ) and Betsey Fenn Morse (1793- ). On June 10, 1850 Betsey became the second wife of Edward Augustus Deming, a farmer from the Hartford, CT area. The couple had four children during their marriage. Betsey passed away in Hartford on November 19, 1886.
Provenance
Purchased from Clearing House Auctions in Windsor, CT in 2012. The piece was passed from mother to son, to grandson, and directly down through the family living in the Hartford and Wethersfield area of CT. At the time the family decided to auction the piece they were residing in West Hartford, CT.
